NEIBORHOOD

Its strategic location in the city center will allow you to stroll around the most important, popular and crowded neighborhood in Seville and enjoy its typical narrow streets, tapas bars and all its charm and beauty. Just a few steps away Cathedral, the Alcazar, the Jardines de Murillo, the Patio de Banderas, the Jewish Quarter, the Hospital de los Venerables and the squares of Santa Cruz, Santa Marta and Triumph.
Also very close to the Plaza de Toros, Plaza de Spain, Casa de Pilatos and within walking distance of the walls of the Macarena. Just a few minutes from the Sierpes and Tetuan streets for shopping !.
Santa Cruz is one of the most important and popular of Seville (Spain), corresponding to a part of the old medieval Jewish quarter of Seville, near the district of San Bartolome neighborhoods.
Located in the center of the city, bordered to the west with the surroundings of the Cathedral; south to the gardens of the Alcazar; east with the Murillo Gardens and north of Calle Santa Maria la Blanca.
It originated in the old Jewish quarter of Seville, when King Ferdinand III of Castile conquered the city, concentrated in Seville the second largest Jewish community in Spain after Toledo.
After the expulsion of the Jews in 1483, the Santa Cruz plummeted, until the early nineteenth century the recovery of the neighborhood decided, for what the street Mateos Gago (the only relatively wide street in the neighborhood opened ) and the square that bears his name was redeveloped.
In the current Plaza de Santa Cruz it was once located the parish of Santa Cruz, which originally gave its name to this neighborhood. The church, of Mudejar style, was built on the remains of a synagogue which was located on the same site. During the French government (1811) occupation the church was demolished in a redevelopment plan of the city and in the resulting plot the Plaza de Santa Cruz was established. The parish located there moved to the former convent of the Clerics of the Holy Spirit, who is currently the Church of Santa Cruz, located on Calle Mateos Gago.
It is a labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys like old Jewish quarters to escape the scorching sun of the Sevillian summer, creating currents of fresh air, ending in places that seem far removed from the center of the city, famous are the Plaza de los Venerables full of pubs and terraces, is named after the former Hospital for Venerable Priests, according to gossip, this place may have been born Don Juan Tenorio; or that names the neighborhood Santa Cruz Plaza has a cross in the middle of the seventeenth century locksmith built on the old Mudejar parish of Santa Cruz; Plaza de las Cruces, small and crosses finished in three columns; Plaza de Doña Elvira, elegant with its tiles and orange trees and a fountain and flowerbeds with seats bricks and tiles, once used as Comedy Corral, this square is rumored to be born the impossible love of Don Juan Tenorio, the mythical Doña Ines de Ulloa, at least that’s what it says one of the tiles that exist in the square; the Square refiners there is a graceful sculpture mythical conqueror of women; the Plaza de Alfaro; Square Alliance, formerly known as Plaza del Pozo Seco borders the wall; Water or alley parallel to the walls, and the water was brought to the Alcazar, and was also hosting this alley writer Washington Irving, as recalled by a plaque made by Mariano Benlliure. Leaving this alley we came upon the beautiful gardens of Murillo, another charming place in Seville. Another output of the neighborhood is the alley of the Jewish Quarter, which puts us at the end in the great Patio de Banderas which is formed by a casería surrounding the Royal Palace and its walls.
Regarding the streets, it is the Las Cruces has two wooden crosses on a wall painted red; Santa Teresa Street, where the Murillo House Museum and Carmelite convent dating from the seventeenth century founded by Saint Teresa; and Calle Lope de Rueda, which has several mansions, other streets less important but no less beautiful are the street Gloria Street Mosque, the street life, the street Pimienta, Justino Street Neve, the Jamerdana street and the street Susona before Death street. And one of the most famous, Calle Mateos Gago, from where you can see one of the best views of the Giralda.
